The 36th edition of the Festival Castell de Peralada, will be held from July 8 to August 6, with a total program of 18 shows that can be enjoyed in the auditorium of the Parc del Castell, the cloister and the church of Carme but also, at the newly inaugurated Cellier Perelada.
The festival is “Dream Come True”[…]“We always said this festival would be my parents’ dream come true, and it’s true. Summer after summer, night after night, they have woven a festival that has established itself as one of the most important summer events in the country and as a festival bringing together the greatest voices.” [Isabel Suqué Mateu, President of the Castell de Peralada Foundation]
The festival always with dance
The famous Bavarian dance company Bayerisches Staatsballett will open the 36th edition of the festival on 8 July with a varied programme designed by prestigious international choreographers such as Liam Scarlett, Sharon Eyal and George Balanchine.
The following day, July 9, the German company will return to the stage of Peralada with a second Triple Bill with plays by David Dawson, Alexei Ratmansky and where he will play again the mythical Rubies by Georges Balanchine. The festival opens a new stage at the Nouveau Celler Perelada where the Rodin show of the Sergio Bernal dance company will be presented. The dancer Sergio Bernal will present a show inspired by three great sculptures of Rodin, in the nights of July 20 to 21, with the intention of humanizing his pieces by the art of movement. The dance, which will continue to be one of the flagship genres of this festival, will lower the curtain on this edition on the night of August 6 with Avant, the show featuring the legendary Cuban dancer Carlos Acosta. Finally, Laura Rodríguez from the company Acosta Danza will also be present, as well as the vocal training Ô Vos Omnes.
Three operas, one night with Josep Carreras and the story of Maria Callas
Lyric singing and voices are the focal point of this festival which, throughout its 35 years of history, has been the occasion to organize countless memorable evenings, always with the most striking lyrical voices of the moment. Tenor Josep Carreras will return to the Peralada stage on 3 August alongside the Gran Teatre del Liceu Symphony Orchestra.
This summer will also see the return of opera production with the premiere of Purcell’s The Fairy Queen (July 22).
A tribute to the opera, the theatre and the great dream nights of the festival, which will feature great baroque assets such as Arnadí’s Evenings and voices of specialized style such as those of Xavier Sabata, Ana Quintans, Judith van Wanroij, Marc Milhofer, Thomas Marcheur or Nicolas Brooymans, as well as the vocal training Ô Vos Omnes. Teatro Real will return to the Peralada Festival this summer before finishing its season. The main troops of the Madrid Colosseum will perform on July 29, performing Hadrian’s score.
The next day, on July 30, the Royal Theatre Choir and Orchestra will return with Nabucco de Verdi.
The Carmelite church will host four high-voltage recitals this year. Young mezzo-soprano Emilie D’Angelo will make her debut this summer (23 July); soprano Sonya Yoncheva (2 August), one of the most acclaimed and interesting performers of her generation; young Norwegian soprano Lise Davdsen, one ofthe most complete dramas of the moment (4 August); and to close this chapter on the female voices of the church, soprano Ermonela Jaho (5 August), acclaimed for her interpretations of deeply visceral characters.
Considered as one of the best creators of the moment, Sfogava con le stelle de Raquel García-Tomas will be played in the cloister of Carme on July 27.
Actress Monica Bellucci will give the floor to Maria Callas, through the reading of letters and documents written by the soprano herself. On July 15, Letters and Memoirs, a show where Callas will tell the true story of his life in his own words.
Joan Manuel Serrat will start the 1965-2022 Vici de Cantar tour in Catalonia on 16 July in Peralada. The polyglot group, Martini rose, will bring its little universe of happiness to the festival on July 23 with a unique concert in Catalonia . On August 4, internationally renowned composer Lucas Vidal will present Karma, an electronic project that aims to break the mould of traditional concert to build bridges between two worlds that are apparently so distant: classical music and electronics.
PERALADA, THE MUSICAL DREAM OF A SUMMER NIGHT
The dancer Sergio Bernal will be the face of the 2022 festival. The dancer, a statue that lives in the garden of Peralada, dances into the world of dreams and presents the different corners of the Peralada Gardens. A magical and dreamlike space that transforms every summer and where nights are filled with dreams. He shows us the colors, textures and sounds that are born in the greenery of his nature and moves the spectators. The Festival thus claims to be a space of freedom, a space of confluence of the arts, a space where everything is possible and where it is enough to dream.
